"[In order] to"


When you are going somewhere [in order] to do something, there are three ways to express this in Hindi:

मैं फल लेने बाज़ार जा रहा हूँ।

"I am going to the bazaar [in order] to get fruit."

मैं फल लेने के लिये बाज़ार जा रहा हूँ।

"I am going to the bazaar in order to get fruit."

मैं फल लेने को बाज़ार जा रहा हूँ।

"I am going to the bazaar [in order] to get fruit."

Note that you can omit के लिये just like in English you can omit the words "in order." The verb must be in oblique form!

तुम मुझको किताब देने कब आ रही हो?

"When are you coming to give me the book?"

हम फ़िल्म देखने राली जा रहे हैं।

"We are going to Raleigh to see a film."

Note : You cannot omit के लिये when English would use "for V-ing:"

वह जगह घूमने के लिये अच्छी है।

"That place is good for walking."
