Relative Pronouns


Relative pronouns are used to introduce subordinate clauses within sentences. The most common relative pronoun is जो which means "that, which, who." Note the following examples:

 

The girl who is reading the book is my sister.

लड़की जो किताब पढ़ रही है मेरी बहिन है ।

The book that is on the table is mine.

किताब जो मेज़ पर है मेरी है ।

 

The relative pronoun जो is both singular or plural. In the oblique and dative cases, however, जो changes to reflect singular and plural:

The man who has my money is not here.

आदमी जिस के पास मेरे पैसे हैं यहाँ नहीं है ।

The men who have my money are not here.

आदमी जिन के पास मेरे पैसे हैं यहाँ नहीं हैं ।

The boy who has to go to the store is my son.

लड़का जिसको (जिसे) दुकान जाना है मेरा बेटा है ।

जब when

 

Examples:

 

The city where I work is not far from here.

नगर जहाँ मैं काम करती हूँ यहाँ से दूर नहीं है ।

I will be there when the train comes.

जब रेलगाड़ी आएगी मैं वहाँ हूँगा ।
