There are essentially three seasons in India:
गर्मी
|
The hot season (Summer)
|
बरसात
|
The rainy season (Monsoon)
|
सर्दी, जाड़ा
|
The cold season (Winter)
|
The word गर्मी
(“heat”) can mean both the hot season, and an episode of
hot weather:
बनारस
में कितनी
गर्मी हो रही
थी ।
|
It was so hot in Banaras.
|
बनारस
में बहुत
गर्मी होती
है ।
|
It is (usually) very hot in Banaras.
|
यहाँ
गर्मी नहीं
पड़ रही है ।
|
It is not hot here…
|
Weather conditions are described with either होना or पड़ना.
Likewise, the words सर्दी, जाड़ा, ठंड can be used for
cold weather.
In Lesson 19 we will learn how to talk about
rain and snow.
To express feeling hot or cold takes the
dative construction with the verb लगना:
मुझे सर्दी लग रही है ।
|
I’m feeling cold.
|
उस बच्चे
को गर्मी लगी ।
|
That child felt hot.
|
The adjectives गर्म and ठंडा are not normally
used for people, but can be used for parts of the body:
मेरे हाथ
गर्म हैं ।
|
My hands are warm.
