Hindi has a special possessive pronoun, अपना, meaning "one's own" which must be used when the subject of a sentence and the possessor are the same. Like all other possessive pronouns, अपना changes to reflect the gender and number of the thing possessed.

Examples:

I know my name.

Wrong

मैं मेरा नाम जानती हूँ।

Right

मैं अपना नाम जानती हूँ।

He is eating his (own) bread.

Wrong

वह उसकी रोटी खा रहा है।

Right

वह अपनी रोटी खा रहा है।

But NOTE:

He is eating his (someone else's) bread.

Wrong

वह अपनी रोटी खा रहा है।

Right

वह उसकी रोटी खा रहा है।
